West Bengal: Sports
In West Beng
al they play a range of sports, like Cricket, Soccer and Badminton.
The kids in West Bengal LOVE cricket and will even use a stick of wood or cardboard as a bat, and rags or old clothing for the ball.
They also play games such as Kho Kho and Kabbadi.
How To Play Kho Kho [ Adapted Version]:
The way they play Kho Kho is to form two teams of twelve. One team sits in a row with enough space for people to run in between. Sitters face side on but alternate members face opposite directions. The sitting team chooses one person to be 'it' and that person stands at the opposite end of the row from where the running team stands. When the game begins the running team starts swerving in between the members sitting down. The 'it' person starts running around the sitting team and tries to tag them without reaching their hands over the other side. When the 'it' person gets tired he or she taps someone on the head in their team and yells "Kho"! That person then becomes 'it' and the first 'it' person sits down in the vacant spot.

How To Play Kabaddi:
In Kabaddi there are seven players and five reserves. The name, often chanted during the game,
derives from a Hindi word, meaning "holding breath", which is a crucial aspect of play. Two teams of seven players occupy opposite ends of the field. The teams
take turns sending a "raider" across to the opposite team's half, where the goal is to tag or wrestle
members
of the opposite team before returning to the home half.
Tagged members are "out" and sent off the field. Meanwhile, the defenders must form a chain. For an example by linking hands, if the chain is broken a member of the defending team is sent off. The goal of the defenders is to stop the raider from returning to the homeside before taking a breath. The raider is called out and sent off the field if they have to take a breath before getting back home.
